Description
From the centre of the city, along the left-hand bank of the Arlanzón, we reach the Royal Monastery of Las Huelgas (51), A Cistercian monastery from the 12th-13th centuries, founded by King Alfonso VIII in 1187. A royal pantheon, it holds the Gothic sepulchres of King Alfonso VIII and his wife, Doña Leonor Plantagenet, King Henry I, Queen Doña Berenguela, Prince Don Fernando de la Cerda and a great number of princes and characters of royal blood linked to the crown of Castile. The church has three naves and a transept with five apse chapels. It has many Renaissance and Baroque altarpieces and splendid choir stalls. The vault of the cloister of San Fernando is covered with Moorish plasterwork. The chapter room holds the pennant of Las Navas de Tolosa. The Romanesque cloister known as “Claustrillas” has the adjoining chapels of La Asunción and Santiago, with a Mudejar design. The Museum of Medieval Cloth has valuable fabric made from cloths and jewels. The exterior of the monastery is marked out by its defence tower and the remains of the walled enclosure. Prices
